Argentine President Javier Milei ruled out the possibility of a dollarization of the economy before next year’s legislative elections, indicating a timetable for his campaign proposal.

“I don’t think we will get there before next year’s legislative elections, but the objective continues to exist,” Milei told CNN en Espanol in an interview that aired on Sunday night.

Milei stated that he does not believe that dollarization will be achieved before next year’s legislative elections, but reiterated that the objective remains valid. He previously mentioned that dollarization would occur after cleaning up the central bank’s balance sheet and reforming the country’s financial system, although he did not specify dates.

The Argentine president also revealed that he is working on reform of the financial system, seen as a crucial step towards the eventual closure of the central bank, another important part of his economic plan. However, he did not offer details about the reform or indicate when it would be implemented, but reaffirmed his intention to close the monetary authority at some point.

Milei criticized politicians for their alleged “gross and violent” robbery of citizens, attributing Argentina’s high inflation to excessive money issuance by the central bank.

Additionally, Colombia and Argentina released a joint statement on Sunday night announcing that they were holding talks to resolve their differences and that Argentine Foreign Minister Diana Mondino would visit Bogotá soon.
