The bodies of the seven women and one man were found on Friday (29) on a beach in San Francisco del Mar, Oaxaca, the state prosecutor’s office said in a statement.

The Oaxaca prosecutor’s office said the migrants traveled on a boat operated by a Mexican, which left Thursday from Tapachula, Chiapas state, near the border with Guatemala. A Chinese man survived the journey, said the statement, which did not explain what happened to the boat operator.

Prosecutors said they were working with federal agencies to investigate the incident and the Chinese embassy in Mexico to identify the bodies.

The number of Chinese immigrants illegally entering the U.S. from Mexico has skyrocketed in recent years. In 2023, more than 37,000 Chinese citizens were caught by police illegally crossing into the U.S. from Mexico, U.S. government data shows, compared with an average of about 1,500 per year in the previous decade.
