Sputnik – Argentina and Colombia resolved their differences and announced the return of their respective ambassadors, marking the end of the diplomatic conflict triggered by controversial comments by Argentine President Javier Milei about his Colombian counterpart, Gustavo Petro.

In a joint statement released on Sunday night (31), the Argentine and Colombian governments announced the return of the Colombian ambassador Camilo Romero to Buenos Aires and the approval of the new Argentine ambassador proposed for Bogotá. Furthermore, the Argentine government revealed the visit of the foreign minister Diana Mondino to Colombia.The statement highlighted the constructive conversations held between the two countries to strengthen bilateral relations, highlighting the importance of strengthening political, commercial, cultural and institutional ties between the two peoples.

Both nations expressed their determination to “overcome any outstanding differences” and to strengthen the cooperative relationship. The same had been done on March 29 with the respective representatives of Mexico.

Diplomatic tension between Argentina and Colombia had escalated after Argentine President Javier Milei made controversial comments about Gustavo Petro in an interview, calling him a “terrorist murderer”.

In response, Bogotá recalled its ambassador to Buenos Aires and ordered the expulsion of several Argentine officials, including Ambassador Gustavo Alejandro Dzugala.

The conflict between the two countries intensified after Milei’s victory in Argentina, when Petro lamented the rise of the “extreme right” in the country in a social media post.
