During a meeting held on March 27, the publisher decided to “review the approach to high definition (HD) game production, with the intention of being more selective and focused in the allocation of development resources.”
As a result of this assessment, the company expects to record “content abandonment losses” of approximately 22.1 billion yen ($141 million). This suggests that several projects have been discarded or will have their importance redefined, amid a challenging market.
This statement by Square Enix makes it clear that projects will be selected more cautiously. Still at the beginning of 2024, the publisher said it was more concerned with the quality than the quantity of titles released.
