Although it already became the longest-running medical drama on American TV in 2019, Grey’s Anatomy wants to ensure that his record remains intact in the future. A ABC confirmed the renewal of the drama series for its 21st seasonwhich is expected to be broadcast in 2025.
The decision proves the great popularity of the production, which is reaching its tenth year since the departure of creator, screenwriter and showrunner Shonda Rhymes.
In a statement to the Varietyshe stated that this proves how loyal fans are to the series and also highlights Meg Marinis’ talent in commanding Grey’s Anatomy.
Part of the series’ production team since 2006, Marinis took over as showrunner in season 20, following Krista Vernoff’s departure from the role. Previously, she had worked as a researcher, editor, writer and producer of the series that tells the dramas and challenges of the hospital team at Gray Sloan Memorial Hospital.

What makes the renewal of Grey’s Anatomy surprising is the fact that the series lost its protagonist during its 19th season. Although she continues to narrate the opening scenes of each episode, Ellen Pompeo (Meredith Grey) is no longer part of her fixed cast.
Currently, the production includes names such as Chandra Wilson, James Pickens Jr, Kevin McKidd, Caterina Scorsone, Camilla Luddington, Kelly McCreay, Kim Raver, Jake Borelli, Chris Carmack, Anthony Hill, Alexis Floyd, Harry Shum Jr., Adelaide Kane, Midori Francis and Niko Terho in their regular cast.
Although he moved away from Grey’s Anatomy in 2015, Shonda Rhymes remains involved in the role of executive producer, through his Shondanland label. The executive producing team also includes former showrunner Krista Vernoff, as well as Mark Gordon, Debbie Allen and Zoanne Clack.
Initially focused on the life of doctor Ellen Pompeo, the series became known both for showing professional challenges and the personal dramas of a medical team. She also gained fame for the tragic ends of beloved characters, many of them the result of disagreements between actors and Rhymes.
