Anthropologist Jaque Conceição, interviewed on the podcast, is against expulsion of students, but understands that parents can be criminally implicated; listen below

This week, a case of racism involving the daughter of actress Samara Felippo at a private school in the west of São Paulo gained attention and drew attention to the importance of rethinking teaching based on anti-racist practices and teachings. The actress opened a police report for “race or color prejudice”, and the case must be investigated by the Civil Police.

According to Samara’s report, her eldest daughter, the result of her relationship with former basketball player Leandrinho, had a notebook stolen. The notebook had pages torn out, and was found with a racial slur written on one of the pages.

The Vera Cruz school, where the case occurred, reported that the two students identified as the perpetrators of the attack were suspended indefinitely. The actress demands the expulsion of the attackers, since according to her the case is not isolated and the school has failed to act in the face of repeated episodes of racial prejudice.

To the Estadão, the institution said it took measures to welcome the student victim of the attack and her family. He also said that he has been developing a project related to ethnic-racial relations since 2019.

How to raise anti-racist children? How can the school handle this case? Does expelling the students solve the problem? Should her parents be criminally implicated? On this subject, we spoke with anthropologist and psychoanalyst Jaque Conceição, researcher on ethnic-racial and gender studies, and executive director of Coletivo Di Jeje.
