Android 15 should bring interesting new features like the option to force dark mode in apps. In addition, it should also allow third-party applications to have an advanced stabilization system to improve video recording.

For apps to have access to hardware-level stabilization features, Android 15 will use a new Camera2 extension API called Eyes Free Videography that has the following description:

Eyes Free Videography aims to lock and stabilize a particular region or object of interest.

This means that third-party applications, such as Instagram, Snapchat and TikTok, will be able to use the cell phone’s advanced stabilization systems, which in Android 14 are only accessible to native applications developed by the phone manufacturers themselves.

To ensure all apps have access to the new Camera2 API extension, Android 15 will include a new option in the Settings > Security & Privacy > More Security & Privacy menu where you can enable “default software implementation of advanced camera features , like Eyes Free Videography.”

Of course, some manufacturers may still reserve certain more advanced features for their own apps, but Eyes Free Videography will help level the playing field for developers.

Additionally, Rahman found five new extensions supported by the Camera2 Extensions API in Android 15. According to him, the extensions are named Auto, Bokeh, Face Retouch, HDR, and Night. They will allow you to capture better quality photos in automatic, portrait, HDR and Night modes.

The description of each of them is as follows:

  • Self: “adjusts the extent mode according to the background of the current scene”
  • Bokeh: “focuses on the subject in the foreground and blurs the background”
  • face retouch: “touches up skin texture, under-eye tone, and more”
  • HDR: “widens the exposure range, resulting in more vivid photos”
  • Night: “brightens photos in low light situations”

However, the availability of these extensions may vary depending on the manufacturer, so the ideal is to research which devices support them if you want to record content on social networks with the highest quality possible.
