No Rest for the Wicked is the new game from the creators of Ori, received with mixed reactions from early players. While many are loving the proposal, others criticize it and seem confused to discover that it is early access, the meaning of the term, and also with the design of a Soulslike promoted as an Action RPG.

Thomas Mahler, creative director of the games Ori and No Rest for the Wicked, decided to use the X social network again to respond to community feedback, in a message in which he demonstrated greater conviction in choosing to launch it in early access, especially with all that happened in these early days, to the point of stating that games like Dark Souls would have benefited from an early access release.

“We haven’t even had a week of Early Access yet and it’s already clear that going with Early Access was one of the best decisions we could have made,” https://twitter.com/thomasmahler/status/1782923630910841207.

“I see that some people are angry with the release of games like Wicked, Hades 2 and the new one from Larian in Early Access, even saying that the studio ‘should have had the money to finish the game and release it at that time’. But that’s looking at a complex problem from a very simplified perspective.”

Mahler says games are becoming more sophisticated and complex, which will mean more Early Access releases. As he explains, there is no way they would be able to launch version 1.0 of No Rest for the Wicked without collecting all the information they are seeing, without feedback from players, “and I’m talking about real players, not test groups”.

Furthermore, he states that even with twice as many employees, they would never be able to launch such a complex product without getting the feedback obtained through early access. For Mahler, several games could have benefited from Early Access, “imagine Dark Souls 1 in early access, instead of From rushing to launch a product in a box in an unfinished state, they probably would have looked at the second half of the game and fully formed it. polish the less polished areas, like Lost Izalith, etc.”

Finally, Mahler says that no update or additional content allows us to achieve what is possible in early access. Even though many are angry, they need to understand that it is something different and that it will likely become much more popular in the future.
