SEGA decided to sell the Relic Entertainment, the studio behind Company of Heroes and Age of Empires, simultaneously cutting 240 jobs in Europe, including Sega Europe, Creative Assembly and SEGA HARDlight. A Relic will return to being an independent studiotherefore it will completely leave the circle of the SEGA group.

The majority of the 240 job cuts involve Creative Assembly and SEGA Europe. A small portion reached the SEGA HARDlight. SEGA’s other English studios, Two Point Studios and Sports Interactive, were not mentioned, so we believe they were left out of the round of layoffs. Creative Assembly had already suffered layoffs after the cancellation of the live service shooter Hienas, which came practically at the end of the project.

Jurgen Post, head of SEGA Europe, said the company is working closely with Relic to manage the transition. He too apologized for the stress caused by the newsespecially for those who will be fired.

“These were incredibly difficult decisions to makeafter reflection and in-depth discussions with team leaders,” explained Post, who added: “The changes are necessary to secure the future of our video games business and to ensure we are well positioned to launch the best possible experiences for our players from here on out.” against.”

Post also apologized to those who learned the news on social media and in the trade press, who learned the news in advance due to SEGA’s legal obligation to communicate the news first to the Tokyo stock exchange, where it is listed.

Relic expressed:

“We want to thank SEGA, whose support over the years and guidance during this transition has been critical to our success. We may have left your business, but we remain friends and colleagues.”

“We’re excited about the next chapter of Relic and hope you’ll join us in creating new experiences for our fans around the world.”

Founded in 1997, Relic Entertainment has created successful products such as Homeworld, Company of Heroes and Warhammer 40,000: Dawn of War over the years. Speaking of the Games Workshop universe, the Canadian team developed the original Warhammer 40,000: Space Marine

That’s not all: in collaboration with Xbox Game StudiosRelic also took care of the development of Age of Empires 4the last chapter of the famous strategic series.
