Ex-Athletico can play in Libertadores 2024 after six years in prison

The Argentine Luciano Cabralwho defended the Athletico in 2016 and spent six years in prison for involvement in a homicide, now negotiating with the Colo-Colowhat dispute the Libertadores 2024. He returned to football in 2023.

Cabral played for Furacão for just six games in 2016, between July and September, when he was on loan from Argentinos Juniors.

Next year, he was detained for participating in a murder along with his family.

The player’s father claimed to be the person behind the crime. The Argentine court sentenced the midfielder to nine and a half years in prison, but he was released on parole in 2022, after five years and four months in prison.

That year, he started training at Argentinos Juniors’ CT and in 2023 he signed with Coquimbo Unidos, who are competing in the South American Championship this year. According to the Argentine journalist Cesar Luis Merlonow the player negotiates with the Chilean Colo-Colo.

In addition to the Libertadores, ex-Athletico can play in the Copa América

The Argentine athlete, who has played for the Chilean national team since the youth teams due to his grandfather’s origins, is on the pre-list of players called up by the La Roja for the Copa América 2024.

Still, Cabral could be left out of the competition. As the tournament will be in the United States and the country can deny visas to people with criminal records, the player may end up not being called up.
