What was supposed to be a moment of joy and celebration for Matheuzinho was marked by pain and worry. This Tuesday, the right-back scored the first goal for Corinthians, securing a 2-0 victory over Nacional-PAR, but was injured in the play and left the field on a stretcher.
The play happened in the last minute of the match at the Defensores del Chaco stadium. Matheuzinho received the ball from Hugo, invaded the area and, with his left leg, hit a cross.
At the time of finishing, however, the player ended up twisting his right ankle.
Upon his return to São Paulo, this Wednesday, Matheuzinho will be re-evaluated by Corinthians doctors and must undergo tests to find out the severity of the problem.
– Regarding Matheus, the first 24h or 48h are decisive. It was a sprain and alone. It was the only thing I didn’t want today: losing more players, because we have been punished by injuries, especially in the midfield, where we have no options, like for example Maycon, who we can’t count on this year – said António Oliveira.
– Maycon was one of the most intelligent and understood the game that I coached, he has a great tactical culture, a hug for him. Let’s wait for the next few hours, Matheus will do the tests to see the extent of the injury. Hopefully it’s nothing serious and he can be ready for the next game – he added.
The player becomes doubtful for the duel against Flamengo, his former club, on Saturday, at Maracanã.
For the position, coach António Oliveira has Fagner and Léo Maná, from the under-20 team. However, Matheuzinho had been an alternative in the middle and attack, sectors lacking athletes.
Hired at the beginning of the year, the full-back has played 13 games for Corinthians.
