River Plate, from Argentina, can guarantee this Tuesday (7) a place in the Super FIFA Club World Cup, which will have 32 participants and will be played for the first time in 2025, in the United States. The South Americans could be the 27th ranked team. Palm trees, Flamengo It is Fluminense Brazilians are already guaranteed.

If Nacional beats Nacional at the Gran Parque Central stadium, in Montevideo, in a game that starts at 9pm (Brasília time), in the fourth round of Group H of the Copa Libertadores, River will be guaranteed via the ranking created by FIFA and Conmebol (Confederação Sul- Americana de Futebol), based on results in the last four editions of the competition.

South America has six places in the Super Mundial: four for the Libertadores champions between 2021 and 2024, and two via the ranking. By winning this Tuesday, River would already secure one of these two positions. If you are the champion at the end of the competition, another place will open up in the ranking.

Today, below the River are Boca Juniors-ARG and Olimpia-PAR. Both are not gaining points in the ranking because they are not playing in the 2024 edition of the Libertadores, they are participating in the Sul-Americana, which does not score points. Boca has a high score, so they should take second place in the ranking.

Olimpia depends on opening a third place, which would occur with titles from Palmeiras, Flamengo or Fluminense, already classified, and River, the best non-Brazilian ranked team. And hope that Nacional-URU doesn’t go far in the competition and surpass it.

There are already 26 teams classified and six places remain: three from South America (one could be from River this Tuesday), one from Asia, one from Concacaf (Confederation of North and Central America) and one indication from the host country.

In Asia, the Champions League final is between Al Ain, from the United Arab Emirates, and Yokohama Marinos, from Japan. The champion qualifies. The decision is made over two games, with the final on May 25th. The Concachampions will be decided between Pachuca-MEX and Columbus Crew-USA, on June 2, in Mexico. Whoever wins goes to the World Cup.

The host country’s nominee must be the champion of the ongoing edition of MLS (Major League Soccer), the main football league in the United States. The competition ends in December. Lionel Messi’s Inter Miami is in contention.

The new World Cup

The first edition will be in the United States, between June 15 and July 13, 2025. Stadiums and cities where the games will take place have yet to be announced.

Of the 32 participants, 26 have already been classified. Between June and July this year, FIFA expects 28 or 29 teams to be known for the group draw. The nominee for the host country and the remaining two or three South Americans would still need to be defined, which will only be decided in November 2024.

The international federation’s management projects revenue of US$2.5 billion (R$ 12.4 billion) for the new Club World Cup. The tournament will be held every four years, with the following distribution of places: 12 from Europe, six from South America, four from North and Central America, four from Africa, four from Asia, one from Oceania and another representing the host country.

The clubs will be divided into eight groups of four teams, with the top two from each going through to the round of 16, and from there the clashes will be eliminatory, until the final.
