Internacional requested, on Monday night (6), the suspension of all club games for 20 days. The request, made to the Brazilian Football Confederation (CBF), was made “in view of the devastating state of public calamity and the overwhelming tragedy that is plaguing” Porto Alegre and Rio Grande do Sul.
“In view of the devastating state of public calamity and the overwhelming tragedy that is plaguing our city and state, Sport Club Internacional made an appeal via President Luciano Hocsman, of the Gaucho Football Federation, asking the Brazilian Football Confederation to suspend all the club’s games for 20 days”, the club began in a statement.
“The absolute priority at this moment is support to guarantee the lives of the thousands of people affected and the assessment and restoration of the minimum infrastructure necessary to guarantee the safety of all those who participate in a sporting event. We ask for understanding, solidarity, empathy and essential support at this delicate and extraordinary time”, he added.
Since the end of April, several cities in Rio Grande do Sul have been dealing with flooding of cities, overflowing rivers and destruction of the road network after storms. The heavy rains caused, until this Monday, 85 deaths, according to the state government.
The Government of Rio Grande do Sul still counts 339 injured and 134 missing. This Sunday (5), the Federal Government recognized a public calamity in 336 municipalities in Rio Grande do Sul.
