Chiefs study proposal to increase scores beyond 12th

-

Recently, a proposal was presented to cover the first 12 and was evaluated at a recent meeting of the Commission of Formula 1, but it was felt that more time was needed to come up with a better plan. The main factor being discussed now is whether or not the points should be distributed much further back – and potentially as far back as 20th place. Currently, the top 10 score points in the main races.

Speaking about the latest news on the points proposal, the team leader at Williams, James Vowlessaid: “I think changing the points is sensible, but there were just doubts about where we would go? Is it P12, P14, P16, or all the cars, fundamentally.”, he asked.

“It was a really good conversation at the F1 Commission about this, where the room was pretty much united to do something that was good for the sport. However, we’re going to take our time to get it right and get it done at once,” Vowles explained. .

The team leader Aston Martin, Mike Kracksaid that as the F1 audience has changed in recent years, it was right to consider a radical change in the way points were distributed.

“I think the system needs to be looked at,” he explained. “We also have a new fan base. We are no longer the purists we were many years ago. So I think it’s really time to take a look at that. Personally, I think there always needs to be something to fight for, wherever you are .”

“I think there was a good consensus in the F1 Commission to say that we want to make an adjustment, but we shouldn’t rush it, because we don’t want to change it again later. So I think it’s important that we think about it well and discuss some proposals different next time.”, he assessed.

While there has been some criticism that expanding scoring positions would make it too easy to earn them, the CEO of McLaren, Zach Brownthinks that offering points for each finisher has its merits.

“I think there could be an argument for everyone,” he said. “Obviously, this would be a major renovation.”

“I think as soon as the points come into play, every overtake becomes much more important. Sometimes cars get closer, they save some things on the car, they wear out, because they are outside the points. This would eliminate that problem.”

“If a faster car is placed at the back, every overtake will be important. So I think it’s possible to make a case for the whole grid – and certainly no less than 12.”

“But I think, as James mentioned, we need to change once and that’s what we agreed at the FIA Commission: let’s do a review. I think all the teams were at the same point, that expanding the points is a good thing to do. “
