Brazilian Lucas Fink will be one of the honorees at the Mavericks Awards, a kind of Oscar for the Big Waves. Three-time world skimboard champion, the Rio native faced, in December 2023, several water walls at the iconic Mavericks, in California, aboard a board of his discipline. The hitherto unprecedented feat was widely celebrated in the world of extreme sports.

Unlike traditional surfing, skimboarding is practiced with a small board. In this sport, the athlete has to run from the sand to the water, sliding over the waves while simultaneously performing several maneuvers with different degrees of difficulty. The Mavericks Awards take place this Saturday night in California.
– I feel very honored by this tribute made by the legends of the sport I have just joined. This recognition and honorable mention received at the Mavericks Awards is really a strong stimulus that I will use as fuel to go much further in my performance in giant waves around the world – commented Lucas, who has not left skimboarding competitions at the seaside and is preparing to win of his fourth world title starting in June, also in the USA.
On the Mavericks adventure, Fink was accompanied by big rider Lucas Chumbo. Before arriving in California, the duo went surfing a giant wave in Jaws, Hawaii one day.
By facing the cold, shark-filled waters of Mavericks, the Rio native caught the attention of local surfers of all generations, the specialized press and the organizers of the Mavericks Awards.
Due to his pioneering spirit, the Rio native was invited to this Saturday’s awards ceremony.
