Lewis Hamilton lost the point he had gained today in the Sprint race of the Formula 1 Miami GP, after receiving a punishment from the stewards. The Mercedes driver committed excessive speed in the pit lane during the safety car period, when the cars had to pass through the pits, and took a ‘drive-through’ converted into a 20-second increase in race time.

Starting from 12th position in the Sprint race, Hamilton was involved in a collision with Lance Stroll in the first corner. The Canadian Aston Martin driver ended up hitting Fernando Alonso, who in turn hit Lando Norris, who spun and was forced to abandon the race. The incident caused the safety car to be deployed and the initial confusion did not lead to an investigation by the race direction.

However, Hamilton’s speed in the pit lane during the safety car drew attention. With debris on the track, the safety car had to pass through the pit lane followed by all the cars, and it was at that moment that the seven-time champion exceeded the speed limit. Registered at 90.7km/h, Hamilton surpassed the 80km/h limit in force for the weekend in Miami.

The penalty converted into race time caused the Mercedes driver to fall from eighth to sixteenth place.
