“It was a very good session,” said Haas boss

Haas showed a very reasonable performance in the Sprint classification of the Formula 1 Mimi GP, and Nico Hulkenberg once again managed to move into Q3, taking P10, while Kevin Magnussen finished the session in P14.

Ayao Komatsu, team leader: “Overall, it was a very good session. The aim was always to get both cars into Q2, which we achieved. Nico came close to being eliminated in Q1, which he himself admitted was because his laps weren’t very good, so we were lucky to get through. Kevin did an incredible job in Q1, but unfortunately in Q2 he didn’t have a clean lap and was out. Nico was the opposite, in Q2 he delivered and that took us to Q3. As always, we have to prioritize the main race, so we made the decision not to use a new set of soft tires, and instead use a used set. We will fight as hard as we can tomorrow morning, but it was a good start to the weekend,” he concluded.

Hulkenberg: “This morning I didn’t feel good in the car, but sometimes it takes a while and we managed to clean up the set-up for this afternoon. It’s complicated, as you know, with Sprint you only have one practice session, and we were a bit lucky in Q1 as I was about to go out because it wasn’t very clean on my side. In Q2 it was very clean and well executed. In Q3 we only ran a used set of soft tires, so we have more for tomorrow and Sunday, but it was tight there,” he added.

Magnussen: “I had a great pace and showed that in Q1, but I couldn’t do a good lap in Q2. It went wrong in turn 7, I braked too late and didn’t make the apex, and the lap was over. On the previous lap, I had traffic, but the car’s pace is good. Let’s see tomorrow, because I think we have a car that can overtake here and I hope we have the pace in the Sprint to advance too”, he concluded.
