Claudio Castrogovernor of the state of Rio de Janeiro, was at Maracanã last Wednesday (May 1st) to follow the Flamengo’s 1-0 victory against Amazonasin a first leg of the Third Phase of Brazil’s Cup.

To the press present at the site, the politician spoke about the construction of Flamengo’s new stadium. Cláudio Castro said that there is “a positive and a negative point” about the situation and that he does not want Maracanã to become a “white elephant” for the city.

“We have a positive point and a negative point. I think Rio de Janeiro needs at least one more medium to large stadium. When you do a study, we understand that Maracanã is the stadium that has the most games in the world, so it is clear that Rio needs more sports equipment.”

“However, we have to be careful that Maracanã does not become a new Mineirão or Pacaembu, which have become true white elephants. So we need to have a business model that serves us and does not harm Maracanã, which is so important for Rio de Janeiro.”

This week, Rodolfo Landim, president of Flamengo, gave an interview to “GE” It is spoke about the idea of building the new stadium. The president said that he mirrors Real Madrid’s Santiago Bernabéu, who wants the venue to have capacity for 80,000 people and to be built in the Gasometer region.

“Whatever we can help, we will help, for sure. However, until the moment we are granting the Maracanã concession, I think it would even be unethical for me to say anything else. Any team in Rio that needs help, we will help”, concluded the governor.

With this matter still undefined, Flamengo returns to the field this Saturday (4), at 6:30 pm, in front of Red Bull Bragantinoin Bragança Paulista, for the 5th round of the Brazilian championship.
