Two volleyball athletes died in a serious car accident on BR-280, in Três Barras, in the Planalto Norte region of Santa Catarina. The young people were identified as Matheus Alexsander Schelbauer, aged 22, and Gabriela dos Santos Moreira, aged 26.

They were athletes from the Volleybras de Mafra Association and were on board an HB20 when they collided with a Jeep Renegade last Sunday (28). Gabriela, who was driving the vehicle, died instantly. Matheus was seriously injured and died in hospital this Wednesday (1st).
Two other occupants of the vehicle suffered serious injuries and were hospitalized. There is no updated information on their health status. The driver and two occupants of the Jeep Renegade were also injured.
Tribute to athletes
Matheus was a point guard and coach at Volleybras. “A shining star on and off the court. Decisive and inspiring, with his strength he made us stronger”, highlighted the team. Friends also referred to the athlete as intelligent, charismatic and kind.
Pointer Gabriela was also honored by the team. “She was full of light, of joy, she infected everyone around her. There was no bad weather. On the court there’s nothing to say, he committed himself with body and soul!”
