F1 debuts camera with unprecedented angle at the Spanish GP

-

The fans of Formula 1 will experience a whole new camera angle from Spanish GPfollowing approval from the F1 Commission this week.

Although teams and bosses were unable to agree a new points structure at the Geneva meeting on Thursday, they did sign off on plans for new cameras in the back of cars to appear at the Barcelona event.

The new camera will offer fans a unique perspective on the cars they chase, as it will be placed on top of the car’s rear structure.

So, whereas previously the rear view included the engine cover and rear wing, the new angle will offer an unobstructed rear view – which should be extremely spectacular when the cars are side by side.

Speaking to Motorsport.com earlier this year about the plans, F1’s director of broadcasting and media, Dean Locke, said the new angle should be able to mirror some of the spectacular footage we get in other racing categories – especially racing. touring and sedan cars.

“Our rear camera [a versão anterior] The roll hoop is good, but it’s in the middle of the car,” he said.

“So you don’t get what we do in the Porsche Supercup, where we put something in the tail light and you can see those two cars that are very, very close.”

F1 worked with Aston Martin and the FIA on some experiments with the new rear camera last year.

Although the view on offer was spectacular, positioning a camera in such an extreme location was not without its difficulties.

Locke added, “It was really amazing and we really liked it, but it’s a long way from our processor. On that kind of cable you can get a lot of interference and things like that. So we’re working on some issues.”

Once the technical problems were overcome, the final hurdle was getting approval from the teams and the FIA, because the camera’s location is in a safety-critical area of the car.

But with everyone convinced that there were no negatives to using the camera, the plan has now been approved to operate the cameras properly at the Spanish GP events.
