Nintendo announces Switch 2; revelation will be made by March

A Nintendo finally officially announced the successor to Nintendo Switch.

In a message published on social media in the early hours of this Tuesday (7), the president of Nintendo, Shuntaro Furukawarevealed that the company has plans to announce its next console during this fiscal year, which began in April and ends in March 2025.

Furthermore, a new Nintendo Direct was confirmed for June, but Furukawa confirmed that the presentation will not feature details about the Switch’s successor.

“This is Furukawa, president of Nintendo”says the message. “We will be making an announcement about the successor to the Nintendo Switch this fiscal year. It has been over nine years since we announced the existence of the Nintendo Switch in March 2015. We will host a Nintendo Direct in June about the Nintendo Switch software lineup for the second half of 2024, but please be aware that there will be no mention of the Nintendo Switch successor during that presentation.”

In the company’s annual fiscal report, also published this Tuesday, Nintendo revealed that the Switch has sold 141.32 million units since its launch in March 2017.

The company’s expectation is that the console will sell another 13.5 million by March 2025 – coming even closer to becoming the best-selling console of all time, surpassing the Nintendo DS and the Playstation 2.

The Nintendo Switch was initially announced in March 2015 by the company’s then president, Satoru Iwataand known at the time simply as “NX”. The official reveal took place more than a year later, in October 2016.

This is the first time that Nintendo has spoken openly and directly about a new console and successor to the Nintendo Switch, with all other news regarding the project coming from rumors or information coming from leaks.

In fact, despite being popularly known as “Nintendo Switch 2”, the official name of the console has not yet been properly announced.

Recent rumors indicate that the video game will continue to use the Joy-Con controller format, but now fitted magnetically, unlike the Switch’s analog locks.

The Switch’s successor is only expected to be released in early 2025, according to information from the podcast OX of Control corroborated by sites like VGC It is Eurogamer.
