Williams reaches the limit with Sargeant, according to journalist

Williams’ patience with Logan Sargeant has reached the end of the line. After a full season in 2023 and five more races in Formula 1 2024, the English team concluded that it is open to making changes and is looking for a replacement for the championship run. And the favorite to take the position is defined: it is Andrea Kimi Antonelli.

The information comes from veteran journalist Joe Saward, who specializes in the behind-the-scenes of Formula 1. According to the Brit, Antonelli’s loan to Williams, from Mercedes, makes sense for the Anglo-German team to evaluate the young pupil’s capabilities. Antonelli, it is worth remembering, will only debut in F2 in 2024 after skipping F3.

At Mercedes, Antonelli’s transfer for a year and a half, until the end of 2025, is welcomed to understand the young driver’s current level and help him evolve. It’s a similar path to what he did with George Russell, for example.

Williams is also willing. But there is one, however: Antonelli only turns 18 on August 25th and, according to the current rules of the International Automobile Federation [FIA], is not eligible to receive a super license until this date. It would be necessary for the FIA ​​to ask for an official exemption from the 18-year-old rule and, of course, for the federation to accept it.

If accepted, however, the decision is that Antonelli will be a Williams driver from the weekend of May 19th, at the Emilia-Romagna GP, in Imola. In this way, the Italian prodigy would debut in the first of two races scheduled for Italy in 2024.

Meanwhile, Sargeant could still do one last race in his home country, the United States, and end his journey at the Miami GP on the weekend of May 5th. Sargeant has scored just one point since making his F1 debut at the start of 2023.
