Thiago Wild is in the second round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Spain. This Wednesday morning (24), the ATP number 63 from Paraná faced the Russian Roman Safiullin in the tournament debut. Playing a consistent game, Wild applied a double 6/4 in just over 1h24min to advance.
This was Thiago Wild and Roman Safiullin’s third meeting on the professional circuit. On the scoreboard of the clashes, the Brazilian now has a 2-1 advantage, adding a triumph in the first round of the Zagreb Challenger, in 2021. More recently, the Russian came out on top in the table phase of last year’s Stockholm Challenger.
In the next round of the Masters 1000 in Madrid, Thiago Wild faces the Italian Lorenzo Musetti. Currently in 29th position in the rankings, Musetti was already in the top 15 of the list last year and is the 28th best ranked tennis player in the competition. He and Wild will repeat the 2018 US Junior final, in which the Brazilian came out on top.
Game summary
Wild was very aggressive from the back of the court, especially in return games. The Paraná native took advantage of the Russian’s second serves to gain more than 50% in points in this regard. Furthermore, he was efficient enough to convert the only break-point of the period and make it 2-1. In his service games, he never took more than two points and managed the advantage until opening 1-0 with 6/4.

Needing the result, Safiullin started the second set taking much more risks with his shots. However, this strategy did not work from the beginning. This is because the Brazilian started the partial with two breaks and opened 4/0. Then, the Russian reacted by returning a break and reduced it to 4/3. However, Wild regained consistency and held the advantage and closed the game with another 6/4.
