More than 1 million people in MT did not have enough or adequate food in 2023, says IBGE | Mato Grosso

More of 1 million people in Mato Grosso they did not have enough or adequate food in 2023, according to the Brazilian Institute of Geography and Statistics (IBGE). In total, the state has 3.6 million inhabitants, that is, one third of the population was food insecure.

According to IBGE, residents of 343 thousand households in Mato Grosso lived in this situation last year. This number corresponds to 28% of the state.

In 2022, 285,624 families were in this precarious situation, according to data from the State Secretariat and Social Assistance (Setasc-MT). There was a 20% increase in the number of families living in these conditions.

The term food insecurity is given when the condition of the individual or family does not have access or has precarious access to adequate food, either due to lack of financial resources or scarcity of food in the place where they live.
