Last Monday night, the ‘Laureus World Sports Awards’ were handed out, an award known as the ‘Oscar of sport’. Max Verstappen, despite being among the nominees, was not chosen as the best male athlete of 2023. The big winner was tennis player Novak Djokovic.

The Laureus is a highly prestigious award, given to prominent figures in different sports. Verstappen had already been nominated in 2023, but on that occasion the person who took the trophy was Argentine Lionel Messi, fresh from winning the World Cup.

In 2022, Verstappen had won Laureus, but this time, the three-time Formula 1 champion was left out for the second time in a row. In addition to Djokovic, other nominees for the award were football players Lionel Messi, Erling Haaland, Jude Bellingham, pole vaulter Mondo Duplantis and athlete Noah Lyles.

Sports legends such as Usain Bolt, Roger Federer, Tiger Woods, Lionel Messi and Verstappen himself have already been awarded the Laureus. Among F1 drivers, Michael Schumacher, Sebastian Vettel and Lewis Hamilton are also on the list of winners.
