Acre doctor Thiago Mappes and his wife, dentist Pollyana Cavalcante, who have lived in Santa Catarina for 7 years, took advantage of the weekend off to go to Porto Alegre, in Rio Grande do Sul, to help residents who are in shelters, due to the damage caused by the flooding of the Guaiba River. In addition to the couple, other health professionals also went on the mission.

They arrived in Porto Alegre on Saturday night, the 3rd. They had a meeting with the team that coordinates emergency actions and were taken to a shelter where they began to assist the people who are there.

“We arrived and went to help people who are in a shelter run by Porto Alegre city hall. There are many elderly people, people with comorbidities, high blood pressure, injuries and pain. We have emergency training and this Sunday (5) we will serve people in the most affected areas”, reports the doctor.

Thiago is from Cruzeiro do Sul and his wife is from Mâncio Lima. He works at Jaguaruna Hospital, in Santa Catarina, but solidarity made him go, with a team, to the neighboring state, where 55 people died and more than 60 are missing.

“In the city where we live, Jaguaruna, there are many gauchos and because we were off at the weekend, we decided in solidarity to help. Along with me, in addition to my wife, came nurse Isabel Alves, from Samu de Tubarão, Santa Catarina, nurse Idailane Barrozo, from Samu de Braço do Norte-SC and ACS Adriana Ricardo. The situation is chaotic, cities in the metropolitan region are completely isolated with administration buildings and hospitals flooded. We will stay until next Wednesday because at this time solidarity is a lifesaver and we are here for it”, reports the doctor from Acre.
