O Chelsea issued a statement on its official website this Wednesday (3) regarding a video that went viral in recent days on the main social networks.
In the images, the athlete Conor Gallagher appears greeting a light-skinned child and then not greeting a black child who extended his hand to him in the field access tunnel before the team’s departure in front of the Burnley, in the 2-2 draw, held on Saturday (30).
Gallagher entered the field hugging both children.
The player’s attitude towards the ‘vacuum’ given to the child caused controversy and was the target of a series of accusations on social media. Chelsea say in the statement that they are aware of the video, but reiterate that the images were published out of context.
The club also criticized the “defamatory comments” directed at Conor and called the situation “completely unacceptable”.
“We are proud to be a diverse and inclusive club where people of all cultures, communities and identities feel welcome,” reads the final section of Chelsea’s statement.
