Florianópolis (SC) – After entering as a lucky loser, Daniel Dutra da Silva debuted with victory in the main draw of the Engie Open, a 75-point ATP challenger, played on the clay courts of Lagoa Iate Clube (LIC), in Florianópolis. This Tuesday, he beat Argentine Gonzalo Villanueva 4/6, 7/6 (7-5) and 6/2 in 3h15 of the match.
A 35-year-old left-hander and currently 455th in the ranking, Daniel got the job after Felipe Meligeni’s withdrawal, announced this Tuesday afternoon. He got his 13th victory in 14 games against Villanueva on the tour. The experienced São Paulo native’s best career ranking is 207th, achieved in August 2022.
Daniel Silva’s opponent in the round of 16 will be another Brazilian. He faces João Lucas Reis from Pernambuco, 24 years old and 319th in the rankings. The São Paulo native leads the record 4-2, in challenger and ITF tournaments, but Reis won the last two matches between them, held last year in Santiago and Lima. The match will only take place on Thursday.

Also this Tuesday, Gaucho Eduardo Ribeiro lost to 19-year-old Bolivian Juan Carlos Prado Angelo by 7/6 (7-2) and 6/2. Gustavo Almeida, from Paraná, just 17 years old and champion of the Junior Davis Cup with Brazil in 2022, was beaten by Frenchman Enzo Couacaud by 6/4 and 6/2.
Four Brazilians play this Wednesday
The round of 16 will feature another clash between Brazilians. The tournament’s top seed and 110th in the world, Ceará’s Thiago Monteiro faces Orlando Luz from Rio Grande do Sul, 335th. It will be a reunion between them, after Luz’s victory last week in São Leopoldo. The match takes place around 8pm (Brasília time) this Wednesday.
Two other Brazilians have games scheduled for this Wednesday afternoon. Santa Catarina’s Mateo Reyes, who came from Quali and even defeated 2nd seed Francisco Comesana in the main draw debut, will play at 1pm against Israeli Daniel Cukierman. Later at 6pm, São Paulo’s Matheus Pucinelli faces Italian Gianluca Mager.
