Former Formula 1 driver René Arnoux regretted Ferrari’s decision to sign Lewis Hamilton for 2025 in place of Carlos Sainz.

Winner of three GPs in F1 so far, Sainz has been showing good performance for the Italian team, but the team has already announced the signing of Hamilton for next season, to form a pair with Charles Leclerc.

For Arnoux, Ferrari should have kept Sainz instead of looking for the seven-time champion. “I was sad after the announcement about Hamilton,” Arnoux told Gazzetta dello Sport newspaper.

“I always put myself in the driver’s shoes and thought about how Carlos felt. He reacted well immediately, with the right mentality, he didn’t give up. After all, he is a professional and there is no other choice. Giving his all is the only thing he can do and find a new place in a competitive team,” he added.

Sainz’s good performance has aroused the interest of other teams. Mercedes, Sauber (Audi from 2026) and Aston Martin are possible destinations for the Spaniard in 2025.

“I think he will find a competitive team. The season started with headlines ‘Hamilton to Ferrari in 2025’, but first we have to do 2024”, concluded the former French driver.
