Flamengo will register Gabigol for the Libertadores and is confident in the suspensive effect

Striker Gabigol, from Flamengo, is suspended from football until April 7, 2025 for attempted fraud in an anti-doping test. The suspension already appears, including, on the official list of the Brazilian Doping Control Authority (ABCD). The player, however, will seek a suspensive effect at the Court of Arbitration for Sport (CAS), in Switzerland, with an attempt to reverse the decision. The athlete’s defense will file an appeal at the highest level of sports justice in the world.

While awaiting the definition, Flamengo will send the player’s name on the list of 50 registered for the group stage CONMEBOL Libertadores. The information was first published by ‘ge’ and confirmed by ESPN. Rubro-Negro debuts in the competition next Tuesday (02). The last game of this phase is scheduled for May 28th. The club is confident that there will be a suspensive effect by then. The list must be submitted by Friday (29).

But can Flamengo sign Gabigol even with the suspension? Conmebol does not prevent the name from being sent, but the club, if the player’s removal is maintained, will lose the opportunity to register an athlete capable of playing during the period.

It is worth noting that the center forward, until now, cannot play or even train on the club’s premises. The contract with the Flamengo team runs until December this year. The red-black board believes in acquittal.

Understand the case

Gabigol was denounced by the TJD-AD (Tribunal de Justiça Desportiva Anti-Doping), in December 2023, for attempted fraud in an anti-doping test, which allegedly occurred on April 8 last year. The center forward was accused of making it difficult to take the exam.

According to those responsible for carrying out anti-doping control, Gabigol did not address the professionals before training and, after the activity, he ignored the agents and went to lunch, treating the team with disrespect and not following the prescribed procedure.

He then took the collection vessel without informing any of the officers and was irritated to see that he was accompanied by one of those responsible for the examination to the bathroom. He then handed the collector open, contrary to instructions.

The trial began on the 18th of this month, was suspended and resumed last Monday (25th). There were five votes in favor of the punishment and four votes against, in a close decision. Due to the delay in reporting, the penalty began to be valid retroactively from April 2023, when the episode occurred, and will be valid until April 2025, a period of two years.
