The Brazilian even returned to the news after breaking a national record for assists playing in the Spanish basketball league, where he has played since 2004.

Marcelinho Huertas achieves 2,898 assists playing for Lenovo Tenerife

Despite already being 40 years old, Huertas stood out in Europe by reaching 2,898 assists in his career, this number was enough to break the record set by Pablo Laso of 2,896 assists. And it had been more than 30 years since this number had been surpassed in the main men’s Basketball League in Spain. Laso, who had broken this record in the early 90s, in the 1991-1992 season, is currently 56 years old and is the coach of the Bayern Munich basketball team.

The Spanish record for assists was broken during a match between Lenovo Tenerife and Gran Canaria, where the Brazilian point guard’s team won with a tight score, 93 to 92. He needed 4 assists in the game to reach the historic mark for Spanish basketball and it achieved. At the moment of his 4th successful assist, the game was stopped and Huertas received several tributes from both his team and the public present, who also applauded the Brazilian for the feat that had not been achieved in more than three decades.

In fact, during the match against Gran Canaria, Marcelinho Huertas was essential, in addition to adding another assist, reaching 5 in the match, he was also responsible for scoring 20 points and grabbed 4 rebounds for Lenovo Tenerife. On the day the MVP of the match was Marcelinho’s teammate, Giorgi Shemadino who scored 22 points, 3 assists and 5 rebounds, on Gran Canaria’s side the player who scored the most was John Shurna, with 20 points.

Brazilian player has a long and successful career in Spain

The Brazilian player has been building this record for a long time, his training in Brazil was with teams like EC Pinheiros and Paulistano, where he stood out nationally in the sport. With his unique talent he went to play in Spain in 2004, where he played for several prominent national teams, Badalona, ​​Bilbao, Baskonia and Barcelona and obviously it was in them that he added so many assists.

However, soon after saying goodbye to the Lakers, he decided to return to the “old continent” making a quick stopover at Saski Baskonia and finally joining Lenovo Tenerife, where he made more than a thousand assists and continues to add.

Among his achievements, Marcelinho Huertas was part of the Spanish Basketball League “dream team” twice, and also won some important titles such as the 2021/2022 Basketball Champions League and the 2009/2010 Spanish League. In addition to playing for big teams, Marcelinho was also a player on the Brazilian basketball team, winning Gold at the Copa América in Santo Domingo in 2005 and also winning the Copa América in San Juan in 2009.

His greatest achievement for the national team was certainly the gold medal at the Rio 2007 Pan American Games. He was also captain at the London Olympic Games in 2012 and was among the players on the selection team for the Olympic Games that took place in Rio de Janeiro in 2016. Huertas, despite not having won, was one of those called up for the 2023 Basketball World Cup, showing that time has not yet slowed the Brazilian down.
