President Luiz Inácio Lula da Silva stated this Tuesday (7) that there will be no lack of financial resources and support from the Union for the reconstruction of Rio Grande do Sul – a state devastated by the rains that have hit the region since the end of April.

“Brazil owes a lot to Rio Grande do Sul, it is a very important state from the point of view of art, culture, work, our culture. What we are going to do is give back to RS what it deserves to be given back, to it being able to get on with life. There will be no lack of resources to meet the needs of Rio Grande do Sul”, he said.

“The initial difficulty is that no mayor, and the governor said it clearly last Sunday, is aware of the damage that has been done. For now, people imagine, they think, but we will only have the real state when the water download it and we can see what actually happened”, declared Lula.

According to the president, upon recognizing the public calamity, the initial idea is that the ministries themselves – Health, National Integration and Education, for example – can release resources to the state.

“It is released according to the fundamental needs, which is to put children in school, put people in the hospital. Purchase of medicine, fuel, water, food. This money is normally sent out by the ministry, without much bureaucracy”, he said.

The Chamber of Deputies approved this Monday (6) a project that recognizes the state of public calamity in Rio Grande do Sul until December 31st. The text must be voted on by the Senate this Tuesday and, if approved, promulgated by the president of Congress, Rodrigo Pacheco (PSD-MG).
