By expressing solidarity with the family of the little dog Joca, who died after a gross error by Gol Airlines – which not only sent the animal to the wrong destination, but also left it for more than an hour in the scorching sun and without water – Lula decided to speak to the Brazilian middle class.

The president stated this Wednesday, 24, that he chose a tie with images of puppies as a form of protest against the treatment given to the dog. The Golden Retriever animal was healthy and five years old. He was on a trip from São Paulo to Mato Grosso, but ended up dead in Fortaleza, with strong repercussions on social media.

“My tie has a little dog design on it. I posted it this morning in protest to what happened to the dog of a citizen who sent his dog to Sinop, in Mato Grosso. This dog, instead of being shipped to Sinop, was shipped to Ceará”, said the PT member.

Lula has lost support from the middle class around Brazil, according to some research institutes that assess the popularity of the PT member’s third term. Today, this is one of the biggest concerns of the entourage surrounding the president of the republic.

But if he wants this to really have a practical effect on regaining popular support, Lula needs to go further. It is not enough to simply pressure Gol for this cowardly episode with the animal or Anac for the agency to rigorously investigate the case.

What would have a practical effect and could help him recover a considerable part of the government’s support among the middle class would be to once and for all confront the abuse of Brazilian airlines in relation to ticket prices. No one can take the “pocket abuse” anymore when traveling.
