Earthquake in Taiwan: video shows subway car shaking during tremor

A 7.7 magnitude tremor was recorded off the east coast of Taiwan and felt in several regions of the country, as well as cities in China. A tsunami warning was even issued for Japan and the Philippines.

The video circulating on social media shows frightened Taipei subway passengers as the train carriage shakes.

In the images it is possible to see a woman standing trying to maintain her balance while holding two iron bars. The train stopped for a few minutes.

There is no information about injuries inside the subway.

According to Taiwanese firefighters, the earthquake left at least one person dead and another 50 injured. The tremor also caused the collapse of buildings and landslides.

At least 13 aftershocks with a magnitude above 5.0 were felt in the hour following the earthquake, according to the United States Geological Survey.

Taiwan’s official news agency said this is the strongest earthquake recorded since 1999, 25 years ago, when a tremor killed 2,400 people and damaged 50,000 properties.

Waves of up to 1 meter could hit the Japanese island of Okinawa, according to Japanese broadcaster NHK. Residents living in the region were ordered to evacuate.

NHK also said that waves of 30 centimeters were recorded on the Japanese island of Yonaguni, which is about 100 km off the east coast of Taiwan.

The Philippine government also asked residents of coastal areas to leave their homes.
