Former President of the United States Donald Trump paid this Monday (1st) bail of US$ 175 million (R$ 884 million) relating to a civil case involving financial fraud in the state of New York.
The Republican was convicted of inflating his assets by billions of dollars to get better deals with creditors and insurers.
The judge in the case originally ordered him to pay $454 million (R$2.29 billion), but a state appeals court granted a “discount” on bail, and so Trump paid the $175 million.
If he or a company on his behalf had not deposited the sum, the state of New York could begin seizing the former president’s assets, including real estate. Trump, who denies the accusations, is still awaiting judgment on an appeal regarding the merits of the sentence.
The decision to grant a discount, which also extended the deadline for paying the bail, was given last Monday (25). Trump and his defense celebrated the unexpected result, which alleviated the Republican’s recent financial problems at least for a while.
Trump has had difficulties with legal expenses related to the various civil and criminal proceedings he is facing during his campaign for the country’s Presidency, which is also a relevant source of spending.
“I very much respect the decision of the appellate division and I will post the $175 million in cash or bonds or guarantees or whatever is necessary, very quickly,” Trump told reporters at the time.
“I don’t need to borrow money, I have a lot of money, I built a great company,” he said.
