Driver fled after being run over in Greater Recife

A driver of a minibus ran over people who were carrying out a procession in the Marcos Freire neighborhood, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes, in Greater Recife (PE), on the afternoon of this Easter Sunday (31).

The accident left at least four dead and more than 20 injured, according to the Fire Department. All victims were at the religious event and none were inside the vehicle. The driver fled after the collision. The information is from G1. Check out the video below of the moment after the accident (be careful: the images are strong).

The minibus, which was on line 118 – Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada, has authorization from the city of Jaboatão to circulate as complementary transport in the municipality. The vehicle had left the Marcos Freire bus terminal square and was heading towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro at the time of the accident.

The collision occurred on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, in a stretch known as “Ladeira da Adelaide”, due to its proximity to the Adelaide Pessoa Câmara High School Reference School.

The Military Fire Department was called at 5:09 pm. The Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) was called minutes earlier, at 4:57 pm, and sent 10 ambulances from the cities of Recife, Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Cabo de Santo Agostinho and Moreno.

The injured were taken to three Emergency Care Units (UPAs) — Engenho Velho, Imbiribeira and Barra de Jangada. Information about the health status of the patients and the names and ages of the victims of the collision have not yet been released.
