Death toll rises to 5 after minibus runs over worshipers in procession in Greater Recife

The fifth death was confirmed by Jaboatão city hall at around 11pm on Sunday. The victim, whose name was not released, was a woman and died in the Emergency Care Unit (UPA) of Lagoa Encantada, in the Cohab neighborhood, in the South Zone of Recife.

The deaths confirmed by the city of Jaboatão dos Guararapes and the Mobile Emergency Care Service (Samu) were:

  • A 75-year-old man, who succumbed to his injuries during treatment;
  • A 51-year-old man, who also died while being treated by rescuers;
  • Three women aged 51, 53 and 66: two of them died before receiving care, and one died in an UPA.

According to the city hall, of the other 27 people rescued, one was discharged and 26 are hospitalized in the following health units:

  • Nine at Hospital da Restauração, in Derby, central area of ​​Recife;
  • Seven at Dom Hélder Hospital, in Cabo de Santo Agostinho, in Greater Recife;
  • One at the Otávio de Freitas Hospital, in Tejipió, in the West Zone of Recife;
  • Six at the Imbiribeira UPA, in the South Zone of the capital of Pernambuco;
  • Two in Upa do Ibura, also in the South Zone of the city;
  • One in an undisclosed private hospital.

The names and ages of the injured, as well as information about the patients’ health status, were not disclosed until the last update of this report.

The minibus was on line 118 – Marcos Freire/Barra de Jangada, had authorization from the municipality to circulate as complementary transport and was carrying passengers at the time of the accident. The driver fled after the collision, but was identified by the city hall.

The vehicle left the Marcos Freire bus terminal square and was heading towards the Church of Nossa Senhora do Perpétuo Socorro, in the same neighborhood. The collision occurred on Avenida Barreto de Menezes, in a stretch known as “Adelaide slope”, as it is close to the Adelaide Pessoa Câmara High School Reference School.

To g1, by phone, the secretary of Social Services of Jaboatão dos Guararapes, Maria Jacinta da Silva, confirmed that the minibus lacked brakes during the journey.

g1 contacted the Civil Police to ask about the investigation into this case, but the response was sent by the Pernambuco Social Defense Secretariat (SDS). The state government regretted what happened and reported that it sent teams from the Military Fire Department and the Military, Civil and Scientific police to the location. He also stated that the case is being investigated by the Plantão de Prazeres Police Station, in Jaboatão dos Guararapes.

The city of Jaboatão informed, in a note, that it sent teams from the Municipal Guard, Civil Defense and the Department of Social Assistance to the scene of the accident and that it collaborates “so that the investigations proceed with due rigor”. He also said that Mayor Mano Medeiros (PL) “determined that assistance and health teams carry out a sweep to identify the injured and the victims’ families and provide all necessary support to these people.”

Also in a statement, the Archdiocese of Olinda and Recife stated that it sympathizes with Father Paulo, the community’s parish priest, “as well as with the entire bereaved community in this moment of pain.” He also said that he is available “to collaborate with the victims and their families, helping and contributing to overcoming this fatality” and that he requires public authorities that “the situation be investigated, with everyone involved in the accident held duly responsible.”
