Volbeat singer canceled show with Metallica to see newborn daughter

Danish musician Michael Poulsen, guitarist and vocalist of the renowned band Volbeat, gave an interview to Metal Hammer. During the chat, the frontman went back in time and recalled the time when he wanted to be a Rock star.

“Many children dream of being firefighters, football players or great wrestlers, but I always wanted to be a rock star. From a young age, I was a dreamer, I would lie on the floor with my head between two speakers, listening to music and I wouldn’t sleep for hours. My parents would come and tell me I was going to ruin my ears, but I just couldn’t stop.

I would create this bubble of sound, just fantasizing about artists and how I could surround myself with music. The idea of ​​becoming a musician wasn’t on my mind, but I was definitely flirting with the idea. The signs were always there,” Poulsen recalled.

In the end, Poulsen ended up becoming a big name in Rock and performed in many places around the world, alongside big names in Metal. The Danish musician and his band even toured with Metallica, a monster in the music industry. However, Volbeat was left out of a performance on the tour in question for a very noble reason: Poulsen crossed the ocean to see his newborn daughter.

“My daughter was born a little too early; when my wife started going into labor, I was on tour with Metallica in the US, maybe in New York.

My wife called in the middle of the night saying, ‘My water just broke,’ and I knew I had to be there – even if it meant canceling a Metallica show. When I went to the hospital and held my daughter for the first time, it was the most incredible thing. I can’t even describe it.”

“I was in New York. It was late, I was already in bed at the hotel and she called me saying my water had broken. There was nothing I could do. I got up because I couldn’t sleep and went to the gym. I got I got a FaceTime call from my girlfriend and she said, ‘You’re a daddy now.’ I almost fell off the treadmill!

I went home to Denmark that day and we had to cancel a show with Metallica. The next day I flew back to the States and on tour. When I arrived at the airport, a car picked me up to go to the arena. I arrived at the arena 15 minutes before it was time to go on stage.”
