“It’s interesting because Jason and Cliff are very different musicians, and I think that’s great. I love the fact that we’re all different, each bringing our own thing to the band. And obviously Cliff was an incredible musician. He was really a songwriter when it came to the instrument, in the same way that a Jaco Pastorius or Stanley Clarke would be a composer. They are people who think about the music, but they also think about the role of the instrument within the music and how to present it. And sometimes that involves using distortion. or overdrive or the wah pedal and being melodic with it. [Cliff]. And then you have Jason, who handled everything in a solid way, much simpler but in a very good way, not without creativity, I would never say that. I think that [ele é um baixista] really solid”

Then, Trujillo amends: “What I’ve learned over the years from everyone I’ve ever worked with, whether it’s Metallica or playing in Ozzy’s band and recording with Ozzy and working with Jerry Cantrell [do Alice in Chains], which I did occasionally over the years, I learned from each situation. Jerry, for example, is an incredible bass player. He would never admit it, but this guy, as a composer, he positions notes within a song and the dynamics of that note in simplicity is incredible. If you listen to a song like ‘Rooster’ you hear the bass that has personality within the song, resonating and creating its space. He’s really great at taking the bass and using it in a simple way, but at the same time making his presence known in a very dynamic way, which suits the song.”.

Finally, he talks about working within Metallica: “The songwriting is always at the highest level, and working with Lars, James and Kirk for 21 years has been an incredible experience because they are songwriters. And that’s special, when you can be in a band and work with people who love the art of composing songs”.
