Fans of horror films with big twists will want to check out the Netflix catalog this Thursday (2). The streaming platform has just received Brutal Nights (Barbarian, in the original), directed by Zach Cregger and starring actors Georgina Campbell, Bill Skarsgard and Justin Long.

Also scripted by Cregger, the film tells the story of Tess Marshall (Campbell) who uses an app to rent a house in Detroit, where she went in search of job opportunities. Arriving there, she discovers that the property was once occupied by Keith (Skarsgard), who displays some strange behavior.

Despite not being happy with the situation, the young woman decides that she has no other option but to accept spending a few days with her unexpected partner. While other horror films would use this as the basis for a tension-filled plot, Brutal Nights shows that this is just the beginning of a very different story.

Barbarian is a story about abandonment and abuse

The plot of Barbarian really begins to reveal her true nature when, on Tess’s first night in the rented house, she begins to hear strange noises.

Alternating between past and present, the horror film reveals an unexpected threat, which has its origin in something seemingly limitless: human cruelty. The situation becomes even more complex when Justin Long’s character enters the scene, proving that everything can be even more serious than we imagined.

Released in 2022 in theaters, Brutal Nights proved to be a great success, achieving 93% approval among the 207 reviews published by critics on Rotten Tomatoes. The site’s audience also approved the feature film, with more than 1,000 impressions resulting in a 71% approval rating.

Produced on a budget of US$4 million, the film earned US$45.4 million at the global box office. Although the way the story is structured makes it difficult to make a sequel, the horror plot will serve as the basis for an adaptation in the world of games.

Announced in October 2023, it will be produced by Diversion3 Entertainment, which has already adapted Friday the 13th and Evil Dead. However, it must not copy the plot or characters of Barbarian, featuring a completely new cast.
