Planet of the Apes: The Reign arrives soon in Brazilian cinemas, and promises to cause a turnaround in the franchise.

Planet of the Apes: The Reign soon arrives in Brazilian cinemas, and in addition to being a direct sequel to Planet of the Apes: War (2017), the feature film promises to cause a turnaround in the franchise, by in a way, connecting both the current saga, as well as the classic saga – from 1968.

And for director Wes Ball (Maze Runner), these are the main reasons that give this new installment a “reason to exist”: “We are not just a part four, we are our own thing. We tried to honor what came before, with the previous trilogy, but also with the original 1968 film”, said the director (Via: CNN).

“Unique” characters in an adventure film

Planet of the Apes: Reign performs a time jump after the conclusion of War for the Planet of the Apes. Many ape societies have grown since Caesar took his people to an oasis, while humans have been reduced to surviving and hiding in the shadows. Despite being responsible for the safety of the new generation of evolved primates, many do not know Caesar’s achievements.

And it is in this new scenario that a monkey leader begins to enslave other groups to find human technology, while a young monkey, who saw his clan being captured, embarks on a journey to find freedom, with a young human girl being the key to everything.

Wess Ball emphasizes that the new characters are “unique”: “They are younger characters […] There is a kind of youthful spirit. It’s a bit more of an adventure. It’s a road movie as we travel through this landscape that is slowly disappearing, the ruins of our world” adds the director (Via: CNN).

Planet of the Apes: Reign opens on May 9, in theaters.
