In the first two decades of the 21st century, science fiction cinema was enriched through works such as Gravity, Interstellar, Inception, Annihilation, among many other great examples. In a list full of critical and public successes, there is one film that impacted a generation of moviegoers: Arrival.
This was the project responsible for convincing Hollywood executives that Denis Villeneuve was destined to be one of the most important directors of our time. Not by chance, he would later arrive with Blade Runner 2049 and the two chapters of Dune – everything indicates that he will also deal with the third – with which he further cemented his prestige in the genre. However, Arrival remains his best film and one of the few titles from this century that deserves to be described as a masterpiece.
Based on a short story by Ted Chiang, Eric Heisserer’s adaptation work required more than 100 versions of the script to reach the final one, first to convince the writer to sell him the rights, then for a studio to want to finance it and finally for Villeneuve took care of her. Not to mention that a few months before filming began, the ending had to be changed because of its excessive similarities to the ending of Interstellar.
