In 2004, director Guillermo del Toro turned the comic book about the anti-hero Hellboy into a film for the first time. Four years later, the character had a magnificent sequel with Hellboy 2 – The Golden Army, which can be watched in the Telecine catalogue. However, there was never a third part. In the sequel to this fantasy film, del Toro goes even further visually and stages Hellboy in an even more colorful and pompous way. The hellish antihero also shows a different side in terms of content. In addition to the paranormal fight against evil, he also needs to manage his relationship with Liz (Selma Blair).

A remake that failed

Guillermo del Toro was unable to realize his idea of ​​a trilogy, as Hellboy 3 was never financed. The franchise lay dormant for eleven years until Neil Marshall dared to restart it in 2019 with the Hellboy remake (which is available on Netflix), but it ended up being a huge failure. While the first two film adaptations received a score of over 80% on Rotten Tomatoes, the new version only scored 17%.

But the studio didn’t give up. Another reboot, Hellboy: The Crooked Man, is expected to be released in theaters this year. Jack Kesy will play the red hero, under the direction of Brian Taylor. The story takes place in Appalachia in the 1950s and is the first direct adaptation of a comic book. Hellboy and an agent from the Agency for Paranormal Research and Defense must protect a village haunted by witches.
