In a recent book dedicated to the behind-the-scenes of the Marvel Cinematic Universe, a chapter returns to the filming of The Incredible Hulk in 2008.

16 years ago, while Kevin Feige and Jon Favreau were still launching the first proposals for what would soon be the Marvel Cinematic Universe, The Incredible Hulk with Edward Norton was released in theaters.

Before Mark Ruffalo brought Marvel’s green giant to life, it was Edward Norton who provided the image and voice of Bruce Banner in front of Louis Leterrier’s camera. But as mentioned recently in a Looper article about “MCU: The Reign of Marvel Studios”a recent work by Joanna Robinson, Dave Gonzales and Gavin Edwards, the production of the film was not easy.

In fact, as a chapter in the book reveals, Edward Norton apparently had a very particular vision for the project and wanted to take the character down a path significantly different from the one we know.

He initially managed to intervene in the script, but his contributions were considerably reduced and the studio decided to regain control of the film. According to the book’s authors, this complicated experience led the team to establish a policy so that creative control of future films would be solely in the hands of the producers.

According to an interview with the New York Times, Edward Norton had a much more serious film in mind, close to Christopher Nolan’s The Dark Knight trilogy:

“I really liked the Hulk comics, I thought they were legendary and I aligned myself with the path taken by Christopher Nolan in Batman. I presented a two-film project: the origin and then the idea of Hulk as a conscious dreamer. And they told me: ‘That’s what we want!’ I enjoyed making this film and it brought me a lot closer to Feige.”
