Rivals | 5 reasons to see Zendaya’s new film

Starring Zendaya, Rivals arrives in Brazilian cinemas on April 26th telling a story that mixes love, lust and competition. The plot is written by Luca Guadagnino, the same as Call Me By Your Name It is Down to the Bones
and tells the story of a trio of amateur tennis players who met when they were young and developed a relationship of friendship and rivalry on and off the court.

The actress plays Tashi, a talented athlete who has to end her career early after suffering a knee injury. As a result, she starts training Art (Mike Faist), her husband and average athlete, and enrolls him in a regional tournament called Challenger. What the two didn’t count on was that they would meet Patrick (Josh O’Connor), a ghost from the past who is the athlete’s ex-boyfriend and Art’s ex-best friend.

From there, the flame of passion and rivalry ignites and what was just a tennis match becomes a real sexual dispute. Are you interested? So, check out five other reasons to watch the film.

5. Cohesive cast

Zendaya, Faist and O’Connor form a trio that exudes chemistry both on and off the tennis court, and it is precisely this harmony that makes the film gain a latent sexual tension that holds the audience’s attention. They are responsible for driving the entire story, leaving no room for any other character to steal the spotlight.

And as the plot is divided between past (2006) and present (2019), the actors also have the challenge of giving different dramatic charges to their characters who, at one moment, are immature teenagers and at another are adults trying to fight against desire. that they feel for each other.

4. Well-built sexual tension

As sexual tension is the highlight of the film, it is important that it is well constructed. Fortunately, the director and screenwriters managed it through a non-linear narrative that goes back and forth to the past without much difficulty. The highlight is that the film does not abuse nudity or hypersexualize the actors, leaving the lust in the field of imagination.

3. Excellent camera game

Even with an excellent script and good acting, it is the cameras that steal the attention in Rivals
. This is because they are responsible for keeping the tension always latent through a game of constant approach and separation. Furthermore, Guadagnino also uses slow motion to favor the most sensual moments.

When he focuses on the tennis court, he chooses unconventional angles and still manages to bring the audience into the match, as if the spectator were the tennis ball.

2. Breathtaking soundtrack

The soundtrack is also another success of the film. From Caetano Veloso singing in Spanish to electronic club music, all the songs chosen work perfectly well and match the contrasting images. While the characters are immersed in a psychological tension that makes the scene very slow, an upbeat music in the background reminds the viewer that Rivals It’s also as agile as a tennis match.

1. Surprising outcome

Throughout the entire plot, Rivals builds a narrative that leads to a predictable outcome in which one of the tennis players wins the match and establishes, once and for all, his place in Tashi’s heart. However, that is not exactly what happens and the final scene leaves both fans and spectators positively surprised. We won’t give away spoilers, but you can be sure that the plot delivers a more than satisfactory outcome and makes this whole drama even more impactful.
