Cultural Support Project – Contrary to Statistics offers reintegration opportunities for young people who committed criminal acts in DF

Faced with the challenge of providing constructive alternatives for young people who have committed acts
infractions, Coletivo Rodeia launches the Cultural Support – Contrary to Statistics project. The initiative offers several free activities – including braiding, rhyming, audiovisual, sound operation, DJ and beatmaker workshops – to provide this audience with a return in terms of employability, learning opportunities, personal development and social reintegration.

The meetings take place at the Open Environment Service Management (GEAMA), located
in Recanto das Emas, from Tuesday (7) and should benefit 120 minors.

For the project’s cultural producer, Daniel Mascarenhas, socio-educational measures
provide an environment conducive to the integral development of young people, stimulating their
youth leadership and community participation. “These actions are crucial to prepare
young people for successful reintegration into society, reducing the chances of
recidivism and encouraging active and constructive participation in the community”, he states.

Lasting four hours, the workshops will be on Tuesdays and Thursdays in May and on
first week of June, respectively on the days: 07/05, 09/05, 14/05, 16/05, 21/05,
23/05, 28/05 and 04/06.

Profile of socio-educators in Brazil

Data from the study Trajetória dos Socioeducandos no Distrito Federal: open and
semi-liberty 2022 from the Federal District Research and Statistics Institute (IPEDF) show
that, in 2017, 142,010 adolescents and young people were complying with socio-educational measures in Brazil
117,207 in open conditions (83%) and 24,803 (17%) in hospitalization or semi-freedom. Between the
adolescents and young people who were complying with socio-educational measures, 60% were complying with
Provision of Community Services and 72% complied with open environment measures.

Of these, 88% were male; 46% were between 16 and 17 years old; 31%, between 18 and 21 years old; the remaining
(23%) were under 16 years old. The proportion of men and older youth in measures of
restriction of freedom is greater. Among adolescents and young people who were complying with
restriction of freedom, 71.8% complied with the hospitalization measure, while 8.7%, the
semi-freedom. Of these, 96% were men; 56% were between 16 and 17 years old; 29.5%, between 18 and
21 years; the remainder (14.4%) were under 16 years old.

Realization

The Cultural Support project – Contrary to statistics is an initiative of Coletivo Rodeia,
with support from Coletivo Movimento de Rua and implementation of the Cultural Support Fund and the
Secretariat of Culture and Creative Economy of the Federal District.

About GEAMA-DF

GEAMA-DF, under the management of the Secretariat of Justice and Citizenship (Sejus), improves the
resocialization of adolescents who comply with socio-educational measures of Assisted Freedom
and Provision of Service to the Community in the region. This body coordinates several initiatives,
including home visits, integration into professional training programs and insertion
in the job market, educational monitoring, support for legal and
cooperation with the social assistance network.
