Since 2015, Global Big Day has been organized by the Cornell Laboratory of Ornithology, in the United States, and people from all over the world, whether professional or amateur observers, spend the day observing and recording as many bird species as possible.

During this edition, the State Park Conservation Units of Araucárias; Acaraí State Park; Fritz Plaumann State Park; Rio Canoas State Park; Serra do Tabuleiro State Park and Serra Furada State Park, managed by the Environment Institute (IMA) with the support of the Government of the state of Santa Catarinawill be open to welcome bird watchers interested in carrying out the observation activity.

For the manager of IMA Protected Natural Areas, Filipe Lemser, hosting the world’s largest bird watching event is important to contribute to the preservation of species, in addition to enabling the promotion of public use and monitoring of biodiversity within state conservation units.

It is an honor and a satisfaction for us at IMA to host another edition of Global Big Day in 2024 in our conservation units, and like this, contribute to the science, since the lists sent by observers help researchers in the study of the geographic distribution of species, analysis of migration, among other data fundamentals in favor of preservation and conservation of these animals”, highlights Filipe.

In the year 2023, more than 3.2 million bird sightings have been made in 198 countries. In addition to bringing people closer to nature, the observations generated during the event are used in studies carried out by researchers to better understand the distribution and number of individuals of each bird species, thus assisting in conservation strategies.

Santa Catarina’s participation in the last two editions of the event was significant and allowed the creation of an active and growing community of bird watchers from Santa Catarina interested in citizen science. In the October 2023 edition, 100 birdwatchers recorded 470 species in just one day, including many endangered and rare species. This is equivalent to almost 70% of all birds already cataloged in Santa Catarina.
