The governor of Rio Grande do Sul, Eduardo Leite (PSDB), revealed in a press conference broadcast live on Tuesday night (7) that the resources raised through Pix ‘SOS Rio Grande do Sul’which has been tirelessly released by the State government since last weekend, are not intended for state management, but for a private entity.

“Pix is not for the government, it is for the account of a private entity that belongs to the Association of Banks of Rio Grande do Sul, which are actually public banks. It is for a private entity, it is not money for the government to carry out any of the actions we announced. Pix’s resources are so that, with the participation of social entities, we can serve the people who have been affected”revealed the governor at the press conference.

The donations, which already amount to more than R$38 million, were destined for the Association of Banks of Rio Grande do Sul. We tried to check more details about the entity, but its website apparently is down. We checked X, formerly Twitter, and Instagram, and we did not find the entity’s official pages on social media either.

To make matters worse, the Gaucho newspaper Zero Hora found that this Pix was activated for the first time last September, during the floods in Vale do Taquari. The Pix key was reactivated last Thursday (2) when rains began to flood municipalities in Serra Gaúcha.

To guard against a possible accusation of administrative improbity, as he is an agent using the structure of a state government to promote the private entity, Leite explained to the aforementioned newspaper that his Civil House Secretariat heads a management committee responsible for “defining actions , measures and criteria” for the use of this funding.

The committee was created by decree and its creation was published in the Official Gazette last Sunday (5). In total, there are 19 representations ranging from the governor’s and vice-governor’s offices to entities such as the Lion Club and the Rotary Club, including the Military House.
