Children are found on the road after van breaks down in Bahia

Around 15 children were left alone inside a school transport van, on a side road in the rural area of Jacobina, in northern Bahia. They were found by a resident of the region on Monday night (6).

As reported by TV São Francisco, a TV Bahia affiliate in the region, the children were crying and appeared desperate about the situation.

They were leaving the school towards the Junco district, but the road was full of mud. The place where the car was parked was dark and there was a lot of bush around it. It was 6 km from the final destination. [Veja no vídeo acima]

The driver had left to get help after the vehicle had a mechanical problem. Meanwhile, a 10 year old child would have been “taking care” of the others.

After the resident came across the car full of students, other people went to the scene and helped take care of the children until another transport arrived.

In a statement, the Municipal Department of Education and Culture (SMEC) of Jacobina said that it notified the cooperative responsible for school transport and created a commission to investigate the facts that led to the driver and monitor not being in the vehicle, leaving students careless.

The company, Coopimonte, argued that the heavy rain caused a mechanical problem in the vehicle and denied negligence on the part of the driver. According to the cooperative, the car would have been stopped for less than half an hour.

Regarding the absence of the monitor, Coopimonte reported that the employee had missed work for health reasons, but this had not been communicated to superiors. The driver also would not have informed that he was driving without his colleague.
