Gabriel Areba, aged 24, died after being shot by a military police officer from Mato Grosso after an argument in a bar in Aragarças, in the west of Goiás. According to the Civil Police, the young man had several police experience and was a member of a criminal faction.
The case happened on Sunday night (5), the same date that there was a shooting attack on the Goiás Military Police battalion in the city, and the PC is investigating whether there is a relationship between the facts.
In a statement, the Mato Grosso PM reported that, after the fight in the bar, the police officer presented himself to the 5th battalion of Barra do Garças and said that he returned fire at Gabriel. In addition to investigations by the Goiás police, PMMT established an internal procedure to investigate the facts (full note at the end of the text).
According to the Aragarças police chief, Fábio Marques, the young man was shot after an argument over trivial reasons with the police officer, who was off duty. The investigator reported that he investigates the facts, images and listens to witnesses so that the case can be clarified.
“The PMMT police officer spontaneously presented himself to his commander, even before the search for him began, which is why he was not arrested in the act. When questioned about the facts, he claimed self-defense”, explained the delegate.
Also according to the PC, the police officer’s weapon was seized and will be examined to clarify the investigations. The name of the agent was not released by police.
